Second Chance Mushers
Welcome to Second Chance Mushers Rescue! 🐾💜Where Second Chances Become Lifelong Adventures!
Second Chance Mushers Rescue (SCMR) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization founded in 2019, dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and lifelong care of northern breed dogs.
Located in beautiful Northern Michigan, SCMR provides a permanent sanctuary where northern breed dogs can thrive through individualized care, enrichment, exercise, training, and plenty of outdoor adventures.
Unlike traditional rescue organizations, SCMR operates exclusively as a sanctuary, meaning the dogs remain in my care for the rest of their lives rather than being placed for adoption.
My mission is simple: to provide every dog with a safe, loving environment where they can enjoy life, build confidence, and experience everything these incredible breeds were born to do.
Supporting the Sanctuary Through Small Business in addition to working full-time as a registered nurse, I've developed two separate businesses that allow me to share my passion for dogs while helping support the long-term future of the sanctuary.
Malagator, Arlo, and SCM Barkery specializes in homemade dog treats, with each recipe individually created and named after one of the dogs of Second Chance Mushers Rescue. Every flavor has its own special connection to the pack, making these treats more than just a delicious snack!
In addition to the Barkery's online store, I participate in local farmers markets throughout Northern Michigan, including the Elk Rapids and Traverse City markets. These markets provide a wonderful opportunity to meet customers, share the story of SCMR, and offer my homemade treats directly to the community. I'm also expanding the Barkery's offerings to include locally grown flowers, bringing a little extra color and happiness to the market stand!
Through the Barkery, farmers markets, and flowers, I'm able to combine my love for animals, baking, gardening, and the outdoors while helping support the continued care of the sanctuary residents. I'm always looking to partner with retail businesses interested in carrying my homemade dog treats!
Second Chance Mushers LLC focuses on sharing the exciting world of dog sledding through recreational experiences and educational training opportunities. My goal is to introduce more people to this incredible sport while showcasing the athleticism, enthusiasm, and natural abilities of northern breed dogs.
I'm also exploring opportunities to offer seasonal dog sled and golf cart rides, with additional details to be announced as plans are finalized. I'm hopeful that this will be the year I can bring these experiences back to Northern Michigan!
A Lifelong Commitment Second Chance Mushers Rescue is more than a nonprofit organization. It's a lifelong commitment to the dogs who call it home.
Behind the scenes, I'm one person balancing a nursing career, two small businesses, and the daily responsibilities of caring for the sanctuary dogs. Every day is dedicated to making sure they receive the love, attention, and care they deserve.
Through the sanctuary, Barkery, farmers markets, flowers, and dog sledding business, I hope to continue building something that celebrates northern breed dogs, educates the community, and creates opportunities for others to experience the joy these amazing animals bring.
Looking ahead to 2027, I'm hoping to expand into a small boat rental business as another way to generate income to help support the sanctuary. My goal is to create a more sustainable source of income that allows me to spend more time caring for the dogs and less time working outside the rescue. Currently, I'm stretched incredibly thin trying to balance full-time nursing, my small businesses, and the daily care of the dogs, all while working enough hours to keep up with the bills. I'm hopeful that by continuing to explore new business opportunities, I can eventually create a better balance while ensuring the dogs have everything they need for years to come. 🐾💜
Thank you for supporting Second Chance Mushers Rescue and being part of the adventure! 🐾💜
